The word hypnosis is derived from the Greek work hypnos, meaning 'to sleep'. Hypnosis is a state of mind where the conscious mind, with its normally logical thought processes, becomes completely relaxed. Someone in the so-called 'trance state' of hypnosis is actually more alert than most people imagine. It is similar to daydreaming and feels pleasantly relaxing. This is because most muscular activity is switched off, and correspondingly, as most of your emotions are also switched off, you feel very calm and secure. Hypnosis has the power to change, powerfully and effectively, a large number of things - thoughts and outmoded ideas, feelings about the past that possibly impact on the future, habits such as smoking, over eating etc, and health issues such as migraine and asthma. It is also enormously useful, and these days used extensively, in motivational sports training.
